T. Troy, Royal Horse Guards,
Born 1789, Basford, Shrops, son of Jno. Troy, enlisted, Royal Horse Guards, October, 1806, aged 17, and at aged 19 was promoted Corporal, 24/11/1809 in Captain Clayton’s Troop. Commissioned from the rank of Corporal to Quartermaster still in Captain Clayton’s Troop, 5 August 1813. Still aged only 24 and of 7 years service it is not known whether Troy came from a good family of limited resource or whether marked out. Unique to the Royal Horse & Life Guards, each troop held a commissioned Quartermaster. Held as sometimes being as a ‘soft’ officer rank it should be noted that of the 10 Quartermasters of the Life Guards and Horse Guards at Waterloo, 4 were killed in action and 3 wounded.

From Harts Officer’s Services ‘Quarter Master served in the campaigns in the Peninsula, France, and Flanders with the Royal Horse Guards, and was present at every action in which that Regiment was engaged, including the battle of Waterloo.’
At Waterloo the regiment regiment was brigaded with the Life Guards and the 1st King’s Dragoon Guards. They took part, together with the Union brigade, in the massive extended line charge against the French. It was a very effective operation which threw out of the way the French curarriers advancing in support of d’Erlon’s left and crashed into the left and rear of the Left-hand French division. Halting the French advance. The Household brigade also had the sense to limit their advances, unlike the Union Brigade, which paid dearly for its overenthusiasm. Lieutenant Trathwell of the Blues succeeded in capturing an Eagle but his horse was brought down and he was taken prisoner before his prize could be taken to the rear.
