At Cuidad Rodrigo the 40th were successfully tasked with the storming of the convent of San Francisco though at some loss
During the storm of the breaches at Badajoz, going up the right side of the breach with Light Division to their left front there is no way out at the top, obstacles of all kinds are fastened there with sharpened sword blades, baulks of timber, shells, canister, mines.
From the parapets the enemy sharpshooters picked them off until the assault succeeded at other parts of the walls the rear of the breaches were taken and the storm won. 16 officers and 221 men were killed or wounded.
Served in the war of 1812, arriving at New Orleans in January 1815 but were shortly afterwards returned to Europe after the return of Napoleon. Brisland was a Waterloo man
