Arthur George Shawe, b. 1818 , son of Colonel Matthew Shawe, C.B. who had received a Peninsula Gold Medal for Badajoz with the 74th
A.G. Shawe commd as Ensign , 81st. in 1836. He re3tired as Captain in 1863.
His elder sister Isabella married the novelist William Makepeace Thackeray, who described Shawe as ‘a merry, pleasant, gentlemanlike fellow, but on longer acquaintance found him tiresome.’
