Distinguished Conduct Medal (EDV11) group, Corporal (later W.O. Cl.1) 78th Battery. Perhaps the hardest fought battery of the Boer War especially at Hekpoort. 11 July 1900, when many of the gunners and drivers fell casualty and Captains Gordon and Younger of the Gordons rushing forward to help save the guns won a Victoria Cross and a posthumous V.C. respectively

Whilst no exact details were found (by me anyway) the junior rank would suggest a. specific act.
Certainly the battery saw hard service throughout the war suffering some 39 killed and wounded in action plus numerous died of other causes.
At Hekpoort, 11 July, 1900 when the guns were pushed forward to an exposed position. With many of the gunners shot down leaving insufficient ranks to withdraw the guns. Captains Gordon (V.C.) and Younger (posthumous V.C.) of the Gordons rushing forward leading volunteers to help save the guns which were recovered with difficulty won a Victoria Cross and a posthumous V.C. respectively
