Roll confirms serving 3rd York

Appears on the roll of the detachment of Captain Cameron’s Company who volunteered on service to Amhertsburg (Detroit River)

During the War of 1812, Robert Bright served as a private in the 3rd York Militia. He was required by law to muster when called but in June, 1812, he volunteered to serve in a flank company that was trained to engage the Americans on the Niagara Frontier. He was selected with his brothers John and Thomas to served in Captain Duncan Cameron’s Flank Company. In August, 1812, he volunteered from Capt. Cameron’s Co. to accompany Mjr. Gen. Isaac Brock to Detroit. They sailed and rowed across Lake Erie.

On Oct. 13, 1812, he was at the Battle of Queenston Heights (Obituary).

From Nov. 25 to Dec. 24, 1812, he served in Capt. Cameron’s Co.

On Apr. 27, 1813, he was captured with his brother John at Fort York while serving in Capt. Stephen Heward’s Company. Most militia men were imprisoned, paroled, and released on the 27th or 28th. Presumably Glass was numbered among them and would preclude further active service.

Robert Bright was born February 5 1790 and baptised on March 28 1790 in Montreal at the Christ Church Anglican Cathedral.

His father moved the family in the early 1800s to York.

Bright first shows up on the York list of inhabitants in 1816 with a wife and one son. [

On Jan. 12, 1819, Robert Bright of York made a land petition. He was born in Upper Canada, was the son of Lewis Bright, of York, a former soldier, and early settler in York. Robert had a wife and 2 children. He was granted 200 acres.

On March 11, 1820, he received a militia land grant, as a butcher in the Town of York and a former private in Capt. Cameron’s Co., of 100 acres on the south half of Lot 14, Con. 4, Tecumseth Twp., Simcoe County.

In 1871, he is listed as living with his daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Andrew Henderson  before passing away in 1873 . In his funeral record and his obituary he is listed as being 98, though his actual age was actually 83.
