Tasked with the assault on the San Vincente bastion close by the river on the north-western wall by ladder escalade. The men of 1/4th set to with a will beating back a small enemy unit along the walls. A counter attack caught them in some disorder sweeping them back again, the fighting was all of a confused nature and in the struggle for possession of the walls 230 men of 1/4th fell casualty. Other parts of the Division following up gained entry into the town taking the still held breaches in the rear.
